With autumn just around the corner, Dr. Susan Martinez, of the Skin Care Clinic, in Rochester, Minnesota, in conjunction with the Mayo Clinic, has issued some guidelines for protecting your skin during the fall weather:
She says “Don’t think because it’s now much more cloudy than in the summer that your skin can’t be adversely affected by the sunlight. Ultra violet rays are not screened by cloud cover, but still come through at full strength. So wear sun block if you’re raking leaves in a t-shirt and shorts. Facial metatastic melanoma is becoming more and more common among our patients, as people ignore warnings about wearing hats and using sun screen right up until the winter months.”
She also notes that most facial melanomas, if caught early enough, can be excised completely without leaving any scarring.
